Great Conferences for Teachers
Not just educational conferences, but conferences also for personal growth
Like to grow? Enjoy a challenge? I often find that staying motivated is a constant battle. I get caught up in the daily grind and when I’m not working the last thing I want to do is personal development. But what if personal development is fun? When I first started working out I was running all the time. Running hurt my knees, lifting heavy weights hurt my shoulders, dieting was a pain. But, I learned that I could do activities that I actually liked and it wasn’t a chore to workout anymore. I switched out my cardio from running to racquetball. Instead of lifting all the time, I started doing yoga and body weight training.
Eventually I started to see small improvements which inspired me to keep going. The same goes for my career aspirations. I don’t like to work when I don’t enjoy it and so I have to get creative when it comes to anything that I don’t like to do. One of the things I don’t like to do is manage my money. Boring! But, I also can see the rewards of a great budget. A great budget is like Weight Watchers, keeping track of what you eat is like keeping track of your spending. You can only manage what you can measure and a great budget allows you to know where your money goes. That is why my first recommendation for great conferences for teachers is Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace conference.

SXSW Education Conference – March 9-12, 2020
I remember when SXSW was just a music conference, eventually it expanded into the arts and grew to technology. Now it includes education, culture, experiential storytelling and so much more. The SXSW Education conference includes over 16 tracks that cover topics from arts and politics to science and culture. SXSW starts just after the Education portion of the event on March 13, but that cost is quite a bit higher starting at $875, the three day education conference is $375 – a steep price, but packed full of content and it’s held in a city that boasts some of the best food and culture in the state. But, you got to book your hotel reservations early as places fill up quick!
The SXSW EDU Conference & Festival features four days of compelling content for education professionals, industry leaders and policy makers looking to connect, collaborate, create and change how we teach and learn.
Summit LA19 – The world’s preeminent ideas festival
Summit LA blends talks, performances, wellness, culinary, and art into one immersive weekend. This conference could be a stretch for anyone’s budget, but, many of these events have paid positions and opportunities to attend for volunteers. Why would a teacher want to attend this conference? With over 80 speakers there is a host of information to be learned to pass on to students to enrich their classroom experience. Plus, it looks like a boat load of fun.
Some of the topics include: From Curing Diseases to Designer Babies: The Opportunities and Ethical Dilemmas of Human Genome Editing, Back to Our Roots: How America is Reclaiming its Health by Growing Local, A Call to Modernize American Philanthropy.
There is only one other downside to this great conference, it requires you to apply to attend, and with over 10,000 people registering that is a lot of applications. For some reason the fact that it is so exclusive only makes me want to go more!
Wisdom 2.0 Conference
Many conferences focus on business and leadership. For teachers conferences focus on students, teachers, admin, test taking, best practices, requirements, etc. But what if there was a conference that helped you become more connected to yourself? More connected to the world around you without the bias of social media? According to their website, Wisdom 2.0 says: We create gatherings for those passionate about living with greater mindfulness, meaning, and wisdom in our modern age. Wisdom 2.0 focuses on the part of humanity that is often neglected: decreasing human connection and its impact on our wellness.
When I read this I thought, “How interesting.” As we become more technologically advanced we interact through screens more than our face-to-face. Does this increase or decrease our connection to others? There are a number of Wisdom conferences around the world, maybe one of them is in your area. The idea of being more mindful is definitely something I’d want to bring to my classroom.
