The Road to Kentucky Teacher Certification is Simple
You can become a teacher in Kentucky without a traditional education degree through the iteach Alternative Route to Certification program. If you have a bachelor’s degree and a passion for teaching, our CAEP-accredited program can have you teaching with full pay in as few as eight weeks.

Once you enroll, complete the following requirements to start teaching in the classroom.
Teach with Full Pay
1-2 semesters
You will complete a one to two-semester paid residency where you will be employed full-time as a teacher in your content area with a Temporary Provisional Certificate. In this position, you receive the salary and benefits of a first-year teacher.

Pass your Content Exam(s)
iteach will identify the area(s) of certification you are eligible for when you apply. Before you can start teaching, you will need to take and pass the appropriate Praxis II subject area exam(s). You can find detailed information about the Praxis test requirements for each area of certification on the ETS website.
We know testing can be stressful, but we have been there and are here to help you with free test preparation resources from Passage Preparation.
Set up your Payment Plan
As you budget, bear in mind there are some additional state-required fees that you will pay to outside agencies or companies. You can apply for reimbursement for your test registration fees after you take the tests from the Kentucky Academy for Equity in Teaching.
Once everything is complete, you can access your Statement of Eligibility for hire.
Prepare for Your Residency
You must secure your own residency position through a district application and interview process.
Supervision During Residency
During the residency, you will be assigned a highly experienced supervisor who will visit your classroom periodically, offer guidance and support, and work closely with the campus administration to ensure you are successful.
Instructional Coaching During Residency
iteach will provide you with 1:1 content-specific instructional coaching to hone your teaching techniques.

- TCKY 5700 Residency-specific course, during your first year in the classroom
- Successfully complete your residency
- Pass the appropriate Praxis PLT Exam for your area of certification.

Admission Requirements

Bachelor's Degree
Your degree must be from an accredited college or university.
Minimum 2.75 GPA
You must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale, or a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in your last 30 hours of college coursework. Submit official university transcripts that include your graduating GPA.

No. No matter what bachelor’s degree you have, it’s your subject matter expertise, combined with your successful completion of our program, that makes you eligible to teach. We’ll teach you what you need to know and do in order to be a successful teacher yourself.
Kentucky requires that you have a bachelor’s degree or higher with an academic major in the content area of certification or in a related field. For example, prospective English teachers must have a major in English, Journalism, or a related subject.
For elementary education, this would include an academic major in any area for which an elementary teacher has permissions to teach (English, social studies, science, math, music, art, health, P.E.), or a degree in general studies, interdisciplinary studies, or similar
For special education, this would include an academic major in any area for which an elementary teacher has permissions to teach (English, social studies, science, math, music, art, health, P.E.), an academic major in an area of disabilities, or a degree in general studies, interdisciplinary studies, or similar.
P-12 Communication Disorders (SPLA Only) requires a baccalaureate degree in communication or speech language pathology and licensure as a speech-language pathology assistant issued by the Kentucky Board of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology.
P-12 Communication Disorders requires a master’s degree in communications or speech language pathology.
No, iteach is not an institution of higher education. Therefore, the program does not qualify for financial aid.
You can complete all program-required instructional coursework in as little as three months. The entire iteach program, including your teaching residency, is designed to be completed within one year. However, you have two full school years to find a teaching position as long as you are enrolled in the iteach program. Once hired, you must complete all remaining program requirements during your residency.
