How to Get Certified to

Teach the Subject You Want

iteach can help you get certified for specific subject areas.

All teachers must meet criteria set by the state of Kentucky to teach a subject. This requirement is often referred to as your “certification area” or your “content area.”

Identification of

Content Area

You must have a bachelor’s degree or higher with a declared academic major in the content area of certification or in a related field. For example, prospective English teachers must have a major in English, Journalism, or a related subject.

  • For elementary education, this would include an academic major in any area for which an elementary teacher has permissions to teach (English, social studies, science, math, music, art, health, P.E.), or a degree in general studies, interdisciplinary studies, or similar.
  • For special education, this would include an academic major in any area for which an elementary teacher has permissions to teach (English, social studies, science, math, music, art, health, P.E.), an academic major in an area of disabilities, or a degree in general studies, interdisciplinary studies, or similar.
  • P-12 Communication Disorders (SPLA Only) requires a baccalaureate degree in communication or speech language pathology and licensure as a speech-language pathology assistant issued by the Kentucky Board of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology.
  • P-12 Communication Disorders requires a master’s degree in communications or speech language pathology.
