January Teacher of the Month

For Mrs. Thompson, teaching isn’t just a profession—it’s a calling. Her journey into education is one of determination and passion for making a difference. Starting as a substitute cafeteria worker, Mrs. Thompson worked her way to becoming a 5th-grade English and social studies teacher at Brentwood Elementary School in Calcasieu Parish. Now, as iteach’s January Teacher of the Month, she is making a daily impact, bringing learning to life for her students.

“Education has the power to change lives, and I have always had a passion for helping others grow,” Mrs. Thompson shares. “I decided to pursue a career in teaching because I believe in the transformative power of education. Each day, I strive to open young minds to the possibilities that learning can offer by helping them reach their full potential. Having a career in this field allows me to make a daily difference as I learn and grow from each student that enters my classroom.”

Inspiring Students Through Creativity and Connection

Mrs. Thompson’s classroom is a place where learning feels meaningful and engaging. One of her favorite lessons revolves around The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich. Her students collaborate to analyze the novel’s themes and explore character development through creative projects like timelines and evidence-based discussions. ” The engagement and interactive fun displayed during this lesson is unforgettable,” she says.

Beyond academics, Mrs. Thompson focuses on building strong relationships with her students and their families. “Building strong relationships with my students and their families has been a cornerstone of my teaching philosophy.”

Moments That Matter Most

For Mrs. Thompson, the best part of teaching is witnessing the “aha” moments when students conquer challenges and truly understand a concept. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see my learners grow and develop their skills.”

Her students aren’t the only ones growing. A firm believer in lifelong learning, Mrs. Thompson continues to further her education, with the goal of one day becoming a state education consultant.
