Questions to Ask During a Teacher Interview

You’ve made it through the resume screening and sample lesson plan. Now it’s time for the job interview with the principal and hiring committee. While the interviewers will certainly grill you with their own set of questions, you’ll also have an opportunity to ask questions of your own. 

Coming prepared with insightful questions is a great way to demonstrate your enthusiasm for the role and gain valuable intel about the school’s culture, priorities, and expectations.

Here are some smart questions prospective teachers should consider asking during job interviews:

About the School/District

  • What is the overarching educational philosophy or vision for the school/district?
  • How would you describe the culture of the school? What type of student typically attends?
  • What are the biggest opportunities and challenges facing the school currently?
  • What professional development opportunities are available to teachers?

About Students and Families

  • Can you describe the level of parent/family involvement and what that looks like?
  • What is the socioeconomic makeup of the student population?
  • How does the school accommodate special education students or English language learners?
  • What behavior management policies and resources are in place?

Curriculum and Teaching

  • What curriculum resources and technology are provided for teachers?
  • How is student progress monitored and assessed? What data resources are available?
  • What will my professional responsibilities be beyond classroom instruction (duties, committees, etc.)?
  • Is there an established mentor program or other support for new teachers?

General/Wrap-up

  • Why did the last person leave this position?
  • What makes a teacher successful at this school?
  • Is there anything else I should know or ask about the role that we haven’t covered yet?

The interview works both ways, so use this time to gather as much information as you can to decide if the position and culture align with your own goals and teaching philosophy. Asking engaging, thoughtful questions will help you evaluate if it’s the right fit while creating a great final impression.
