Praxis Exams
Apart from the required components within iteach Louisiana (coursework and residency) every future teacher must pass specific Louisiana teacher certification tests to demonstrate to schools and the state competency. These exams, called Praxis exams, are administered by the Education Testing Services (ETS.org). The process to compete Louisiana teacher certification testing can be confusing. Hopefully this page helps!
When registering for your exam, you can select iteach Louisiana to be a recipient of your scores by using our school code: 6255. You can also either email or upload your scores to your iteach portal so that our office has a record of your passing results.
Every applicant is required to have passed Praxis II to be eligible to enroll in the program.
Praxis II – Subject
The Praxis II is required to be passed in order to enroll in the program. You can apply and start the application process before it is passed, but it must be passed in order to formally enroll. Below is a complete list of certification areas that we are approved to offer certification. Clicking on the test name will take you immediately to study information regarding the exam.
If you passed an older Praxis II exam which was approved at the time you took it, we can accept those scores.

No Approved Praxis Exam Subject Areas
There are eight content areas in which the state of Louisiana’s Department of Education has not approved a Praxis exam to demonstrate subject matter knowledge. Rather, in these eight areas you must have 31 hours of college coursework correlating to the subject area. These areas are:
- 6-12 Computer Science
- 6-12 Earth Science
- 6-12 Environmental Science
- 6-12 Italian
- 6-12 Journalism
- 6-12 Latin
- 6-12 Marketing
- K-12 Dance
For details regarding what college coursework would be acceptable for these areas, please click here.
Praxis – Principles of Learning and Teaching
At this point you have passed your Praxis II exam. While teaching, there is a final exam you must pass to earn your Level 1 Professional Certificate: Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT). Depending on the grade level in which you are teaching, you will take one of the following PLT exams.

Please note that there is some overlap between Early Childhood PLT and Elementary PLT. Though there is one Praxis II (5018/5001) for both areas, depending on the subject you are teaching, you will take either Early Childhood or Elementary PLT exam.
World Languages
If you are seeking certification in a foreign language (Chinese, French, German or Spanish) you will NOT take the PLT. You will take the World Languages Pedagogy (#5841) instead.
Praxis Teaching Reading
State regulations dictate that all candidates seeking certification in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or a Middle School core content area complete a Teaching Reading Requirement.
There are four ways that this requirement can be satisfied:
1) Pass Praxis #5206.
2) Enroll in and complete the iteach literacy courses. TEPC 6004 & 6005 are required for Early Childhood and Elementary, while only TEPC 6005 is required for Middle School educators.
Enrollment must be requested via [email protected] ONLY AFTER you have completed courses TEPC 5000 – 5600.
3) Have 9+ hours of educational literacy courses on your college transcripts.
Requests for transcript evaluation should be submitted via [email protected]
