Nicole Crawford, a seventh-grade science teacher at DeRidder Junior High School (DJHS) in Louisiana, is making waves in education with her creative approach to teaching. Named both the Beauregard Parish Middle School Teacher of the Year and the Science Department Head at DJHS, Nicole’s dedication to her students and fellow educators shines through in every aspect of her work.
Her journey into teaching is an inspiring one. After earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dairy Science from Louisiana State University in 1996, Nicole initially focused on homeschooling her children and working as a substitute teacher. It wasn’t long before she discovered her passion for education, accepting a year-long substitute role teaching biology at DeRidder High School. This experience sparked her decision to pursue a formal teaching certification, and in 2020, she proudly graduated from iteach Louisiana.
Since then, Nicole has flourished in her role as an educator. She has taken on leadership positions as the Science Department Head and a member of the Internal Leadership Team at DJHS, where she mentors her peers to implement innovative teaching methods that engage students of all backgrounds.
One of Nicole’s standout achievements is her role in bringing new teaching resources, like iScience and Kesler Science, to Beauregard Parish. But perhaps her most hands-on contribution comes from her involvement in the Adopt-a-Cow program, where her students delve into the practical aspects of science through activities like testing milk samples, building barns, and taking virtual farm tours. Through these real-world lessons, Nicole makes science come alive, helping students connect classroom learning to tangible experiences.
For Nicole, the best part of teaching is witnessing the “light bulb” moments when students grasp new concepts. “Once you know the students understand what you are teaching them and you see that joy and excitement spread across their faces, then you know you are making a difference,” she says.
Beyond the classroom, Nicole serves as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes sponsor at DJHS, encouraging students to develop not only academically but also in their faith. Her hope is to see the next generation of students grow in their love for science, education, and personal development.
