Kayla Qualls has dreamed of becoming a teacher since kindergarten. Today, thanks to iteach, her dream has come true.
Kayla is a first-grade teacher at Batterman Elementary School in Las Vegas, Nevada, part of Clark County School District. She’s our January teacher of the month because of the hard work and dedication she puts in for her students.
“Student connection and engagement has been a huge focus for me,” Kayla told us in her application.
It’s easy to see this in action. We asked Kayla to tell us about some of her recent lessons, and honestly, we’re jealous we’re not her students!
In December, her class learned all about holidays around the world. But it wasn’t just social studies that was winter-themed. For social-emotional learning and science, her class made calming snow jars.
She even incorporated the season into phonics! Kayla made snow out of shaving cream, and her students practiced writing words in the “snow.”
Kayla said that throughout the past month, her students have told her she’s the best more times than she can count.
The parents of her students also know how great Kayla is. They surprised her over the break with a holiday card from all of the students, something Kayla will treasure forever.
We asked Kayla what her favorite part of being a teacher is: “My favorite part about being a teacher is knowing I’m making a difference to my students. This job is NOT easy, but ultimately, I keep going because I know the impact I have on my students.”
Kayla isn’t just teaching. She’s creating memorable experiences for her students, and she’s become a safe place where her students feel loved.
“I want my students to know I care about them. I don’t think they question it.”
We don’t think so either, Kayla. Keep up the great work, and congratulations!
