Below are the requirements for acceptance into the iteach alternative teacher certification program.

Requirements for Program Admission

Bachelor’s Degree

You must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university that is recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).

GPA Requirement

Your undergraduate GPA must be a minimum of 2.50, OR Minimum 2.50 GPA in the last 60 hours of your undergrad classes.

Transcripts

Upload your official transcripts to the Applied #1 box in InstructNet. If you don’t have your transcripts, visit your college or university website and request transcripts from your school’s registrar.

Coursework

Complete introductory course 5000.

How to Get Certified to

Teach the Subject You Want

iteach can help you get certified for specific subject areas.

All teachers must meet criteria set by the state of Texas to teach a subject. This requirement is often referred to as your “certification area” or your “content area.”

Identification of

Content Area

iteach determines the subject (content area) you are eligible to teach when we review your application. You qualify to teach a content area if you meet one of these criteria:

  • Have an undergraduate or graduate degree in a content area you would like to teach, OR 
  • You provide college transcripts showing you have taken at least 15 hours of courses in English, Math, Science or Social Studies (to teach grades 4-8 in those subjects), OR
  • You provide transcripts showing you have taken at least 12 hours of English, Math, Science and Social Studies (to teach EC-6 CORE, 4-8 CORE or EC-12 Special Education)

Teacher Certification Areas in Texas

iteach offers initial certification for the subject areas shown below.

Core Subjects EC-6 (391) * 

This exam includes the following subjects:

  • English Language Arts and Reading
  • Mathematics
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Fine Arts, Health and Physical Education


To pass the EC-6 Core Subjects exam (391), you must receive a passing score on each subject. You must register for all subject areas for your first attempt. If, upon completion of the entire EC-6 Core Subjects exam, you do not pass one or more of the subject exams, you will need to retake either a single subject exam, if you passed ALL of the other subject exams; or the overall exam, if you did not pass two or more subject exams.

* Candidates seeking certification in this area are also required to take the Science of Teaching Reading (293) exam.

Current College

Enrollee Requirements

If you are completing your final semester of coursework for your bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution of higher education, you may be eligible for admission on a contingent basis.

To qualify for contingency admittance, include the documents below, along with your application.

  • Letter of completion from an academic advisor or registrar’s office. (This letter must indicate that you are currently completing your final semester and are eligible for graduation.)
  • Official transcripts up through the previous semester

Application deadlines:

  • Spring graduates may apply January 1 – May 1
  • Summer graduates may apply June 1 – August 1
  • Fall graduates may apply September 1 – December 1

After acceptance as a contingency candidate, you may move forward to test in any content area and begin your coursework.

To transition to full-program admission, you will need to meet our general admissions requirements and provide an official transcript showing you have a conferred degree. Once completed, we will send you a Statement of Eligibility, which qualifies you to be hired in a teaching position.

Other Requirements:

  • Correspond using your personal email account
  • Access to a personal (not school) computer
  • Add iteach.net to your contacts list
  • Verification of Work Authorization Status. If not a U.S. citizen, you must provide verification of lawful permanent residence and a copy of your current Green Card at the time of application with at least two years of employment eligibility.


Outside of United States

Graduate Requirements

Graduates from a university outside the United States or its territories will need to provide:

The credential evaluation must include the following information: 

  • Verification that one holds the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree granted by an accredited institution of higher education in the United States, including the month, day, and year that the degree was conferred
  • U.S. equivalency for each credential
  • Course-by-course analysis
  • Cumulative GPA of credit hours

Submit acceptable documentation of English language proficiency by one of the following options:. 

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT)  Proof of oral English language proficiency through verification of minimum scaled scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT) of 24 for speaking, 22 for listening, 22 for reading, and 21 for writing.  You may use the institution code B291 when registering for the TOEFL on the ETS website to send scores directly to iteachTEXAS. NOTE:TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the test date. If your scores are older than two years, you will be required to retest.
  • Earned Master’s degree from an accredited U.S. university. Please send official transcripts. 
  • Or if an undergraduate or graduate degree was earned at an institution of higher education in a country outside of the United States But appears on the Attached Graphic, you may be exempt from the TOEFL iBT test, CLICK HERE.
